Ode to Coffee

Oh, coffee, you reborative drink,
Without you my mind would be lost, I think.

Fairest of beverages, fruit of the bean,
What morning, with clarity, without you is seen?

You hot steamy blessing, you dark bitter brew,
How many lives are cut short, but for you?

Dear coffee I love you, for all that you’ve given
To me and to others, who work for a livin’.

More lovely than nicotine, less fatal than meth,
To you do I pledge all my mornings, ’til death.

Winston had a large black dog
It followed him about
While Winston slept
It chased his dreams
Or lay there round and stout
It licked his face
It bit his hand
It growled
It snarled
It smelt
It gnawed away at Winston’s faith
In God
In man
In self.– Peter Brown

I was very young when I first realized I had super-powers.

I can remain invisible for extended periods of time. Junior High, for example.

I can bend time and space so as to be alone in crowded rooms.

I have unbridled ability to alienate even the most steadfast of lovers.

I’ve never been anything but impervious to good advice.

In my classroom, I can fly right over the heads of students with no effort.

I can see through the folly of non-procrastination.

I can make money disappear.

Stan Lee wanted to put my life in four-color panels, but in the end said no one would believe it. He went with “Hellboy” instead.

Poetry Corner

Lent

I tried to get up early to pray. No luck.
I tried to quit smoking. I added “so much”
I tried to fast. That ended quickly.

The word “try” is my mortal enemy.
All the times I’ve “tried” I’ve failed.
Try not to try for Lent.

Poetry Corner

Back when your parents were married
And Tonka Trucks were made of metal
And you could stomp for clams right behind the house
And you could hike all day and not get lost
And school was fun
And you knew Christmas would be good
And your brother was your best friend
And girls had no power over you
And you didn’t know you were poor
And the best part of the day was when Dad got home from work
You should have quit while you were ahead.

Poetry Corner

When I was a boy
I thought there were
People in the TV,
Acting out the parts.

The flying monkeys of Oz
Scared me terribly,
And I wondered how they
Ever got in there.

The ad for angel food cake
Scared me too. With the
Angel on the cloud playing
His harp and telling me how
Wonderful it tasted.

I was too young to know I
Feared my mortality already,
But I don’t know any
Other explanation.

Thanks to Fr. Jim for posting this poem by St. Augustine, which I shamelessly reproduce here:

Late have I loved Thee, O Beauty so ancient and so new, late have I loved Thee!

And, behold, Thou wert within me and I myself on the outside, and it was there that I sought Thee.

And into those lovely things, which Thou madest, All unlovely did I rush.

Thou wert with me, but I was not with Thee.

Those things kept me far from Thee, things that would not exist, unless they were in Thee.

Thou didst call, and shout, and shatter my deafness:

Thou didst sparkle, and shine, and dispel my blindness:

Thou sentest forth Thy fragrance, and I breathed deeply, and now I sigh for Thee:

I tasted, and now do hunger and thirst:

Thou didst touch me, and I burned for Thy peace.
