So Mike Huckabee holds a fundraiser down in Houston at the Home of a Dr. Steven Hotze. The good Dr. is a leader of the Christian Reconstructionism movement.
“What’s Christian Reconstructionism?” I hear you ask. Is it like Habitat for Humanity, or something like that?
Um, no.
Christian Reconstructionism is the belief that our government should be run solely on Biblical principles.
Here’s a quote from a manifesto published by one CR group a few years ago:
We affirm that the Bible is not only God’s statements to us regarding religion, salvation, eternity, and righteousness, but also the final measurement and depository of certain fundamental facts of reality and basic principles that God wants all mankind to know in the sphere of law, government, economics, business, education, arts and communication, medicine, psychology, and science. All theories and practices of these spheres of life are only true, right, and realistic to the degree that they agree with the Bible.
Hey good idea.
Let’s leave behind for a second the dearth of guidance given in the Bible on these subjects. Let’s even leave behind for a moment that minor detail of a little thing called the First Amendment. But seriously, have you ever seen a roomful of Bible Believers try to agree on what the Bible actually says? Talk about gridlock.
Forget gridlock; there’d be a civil war within six months of a takeover by these people. Thanks, but no.
I was already convinced Mike Huckabee wasn’t ever going to be my candidate, but I couldn’t define my reasons, apart from just a gut feeling of creepiness. Nice to have something solid to hang my hat on now.
